PAUL GETS BEHIND THE WHEEL IN AN INDIAN ADVENTURE
Paul Fullick has traded a three-wheel Asian adventure to get back behind the wheel of a McLaren racing car ahead of the new motorsport season.
Alongside Matt Hampson Foundation beneficiaries Noah Cosby and Aaron Morgan, Paul is a member of TeamBrit, the world’s only competitive racing team of all-disabled drivers, and through those links the Foundation was his chosen charity for attempting the ‘Rickshaw Run’ in India.
He lined up among 70 teams tasked with travelling 3,000 miles on board three-wheel tuk tuks from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan to Fort Kochi in the south of the country, finding their own course to beat the time limit.
“The tuk tuk is used in parts of the world for everything from moving stock to taxis,” said Paul, a former member of the British Army. “But they are not designed to go cross country or up and down mountains and the different terrains we had to experience. Not all of them stood up to the challenge!”
Joined by team-mates Gordon and Joao, Paul faced some unique challenges as a lower-leg amputee as a result of a motorcycle accident in 2021. Transporting a wheelchair meant strapping the wheels to the roof of the team’s tuk tuk and carrying the base between the two passengers on the tiny backseat.
After completing the trek, he said: “I’m so proud that we raised almost £2,000 for the Matt Hampson Foundation which I know will be put to such great use in helping people facing adversity.
“A massive thank-you to everyone who supported us.”
Paul returned home to Southampton before returning to work in a TeamBrit McLaren for pre-season testing in Portugal and on to opportunities presented by new challenges.
He told BBC Radio Solent: “You make your own future and what you are going to make it.
“If you have an outgoing attitude and good people around to support you, I would say, ‘Go out and do as much as you can because life can be amazing and it can be your ticket to go on and do some amazing things in life’.”
