NORTHERN HUB MOVES INTO NEW HOME TO WELCOME MORE BENEFICIARIES
The Matt Hampson Foundation’s first regional hub has moved into a new home on Tyneside, providing accessible gym and physiotherapy facilities to beneficiaries in the North-East of England.
The award-winning charity, which supports young people seriously injured through sport, launched a northern hub at Gym Possible in 2023 and will continue to work closely with the team at its new premises in Gateshead on Tyneside.
Matt Hampson and Foundation chief executive Tommy Cawston were in attendance when Gym Possible founder Drew Graham unveiled the new premises this month.
Drew, an elite athlete as a national collegiate champion in the USA and Olympic trials competitor before a spinal cord injury in 2014 started his venture when he returned to England and was unable to unable to find a suitable affordable gym for wheelchair users like himself.
Initially based in Gateshead, he moved to Newcastle but has now transferred to new, larger premises within Gateshead Leisure Centre, with the aim of making exercise physically and financially accessible to people with physical disability. There is also an option for visitors to book physio and personal trainer sessions.
“My vision for Gym Possible has always been to give accessibility to as many people as possible and this new site allows is to do that,” said Drew.
The Matt Hampson Foundation was established to offer specialist support, advice and treatment to young people following life-changing injury from participation in sporting activity. Its headquarters at the Get Busy Living Centre in Leicestershire provides physiotherapy and personal training alongside wellbeing support and health advice. The addition of regional hubs will allow the Foundation to take that support closer to beneficiaries in other areas of the country.
