HAMBO THROWDOWN GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

The third annual Hambo Throwdown attracted 30 wheelchair athletes to the world-class facilities of Loughborough University for a full day of competition.

Organised by the Matt Hampson Foundation with support from HCC Solicitors, Fletchers Solicitors and Built For Athletes, the Throwdown is the first fitness competition in the UK exclusively for wheelchair users and the scoring system creates a completely open field with each entrant competing against everyone else.

Foundation sports therapist George Thompson created the event in 2024 and has now welcomed more than 80 entries in its three years.

“We are passionate about people being as active as they can possibly be and hope this is a space and a day for everyone, regardless of their condition or injury,” he said.

“Some of our athletes have been with us every year and we’ve seen their growth, which is really special. Alongside them, there are others who feel this space is right for them and here for the first time.”

The three workouts featured Ski-Erg, rowing, Echo bikes, pull-ups, barbell press, slam balls and snatch reps with Joe Clarke winning the men’s event ahead of debutant Nick Hewitt and Foundation beneficiary Jacob Smith. Women’s winner was Jen Warren, ahead of Tori Clinch and Elle Dempsey, and there was a Performance of the Day award for Cat Yearron.

Thank you to everyone who took part and to the team of judges and volunteers who assisted in making this such a great day in the Foundation calendar.
