WILL RUANE
Will discovered a passion for exercise with the Matt Hampson Foundation and found his way in a new sport alongside a pathway back into work as a furnace manager in the glass manufacturing industry.
He tried everything from waterskiing to canoeing and open-water swimming to golf before becoming a national champion in para-climbing.
Will also gained selection for the British squad and earned a top-10 place in his World Cup debut in 2024 as well as embarking on a mission to grow the sport even if it means facing stronger competition.
“When I left hospital, I came to the Get Busy Living Centre to have a look and I was in awe of the place. I thought ‘I’d better get involved in that!,” says Will.

After a suggestion that he should try the sport of climbing, Will attended his first session and immediately found something he wanted to pursue.
“It is something I can do independently, it is accessible in terms of competition and cost, so it works well for me,” he says.
“I wanted to take sport seriously, but I also have a career I love, so it is about getting into something I enjoy. I also see it as part of rehab.
“I’m very keen to try to show people it is possible and accessible, and I want to grow the sport. The more people involved in it the better.”
Will received the Foundation’s Get Busy Living Award in 2023 as someone who has changed their life after injury and truly encompasses the Foundation mantra of ‘get busy living’.
“I came to the Centre to have a look and, like everyone else, I was in awe of the place. I thought ‘I’d better get involved in that!’.”
