DISABILITY AWARENESS FOR GYM OWNERS AND PERSONAL TRAINERS

The Matt Hampson Foundation is hosting a Disability Training Seminar for health and fitness professionals to share knowledge of working with people with a variety of disabilities.

The seminar is at the Foundation’s award-winning Get Busy Living Centre near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire on Friday 16th May (9.00am-4.30pm).

This is a perfect opportunity to gain valuable insights and skills related to disability training.

Created with health and fitness professionals in mind, we will help you to think creatively and communicate effectively with your clients to help them get the best results from their exercise and fitness routines.

A day of learning and networking will combine evidence-based leadership development exercises, expert advice and lived experience aimed at helping health and fitness workers to reach a new standard of coaching.

The course is designed to help you apply existing knowledge so an existing qualification in Personal Training, Gym Instructing, Sports Science or Strength and Conditioning is needed to ensure you will get the most from the course.

We encourage managers/owners to bring their teams (up to five members) to help us to increase the awareness and knowledge of working with people with disabilities in as many venues as possible.

Foundation beneficiaries regularly tell us how inaccessible many gyms are for them and how they are not confident they can attend these spaces independently.

According to the most recent census, 24 per cent of the UK population report having a disability, equating to more than 16 million people. The Activity Alliance found that 81 per cent of people with a disability want to be more active but feel unable to do so.

In our own survey of gym owners and personal trainers, around 75 per cent said they would not feel confident to include someone with a disability in an exercise class.

This begins to highlight the lack of accessibility and inclusion within the industry, and the Matt Hampson Foundation is uniquely placed to improve it through sharing knowledge and expertise.

The ultimate aim is to create a world where any person with a disability can attend any commercial gym and find a space that works for them and professionals who understand how to work with them effectively.
