CREWS TACKLE LIFE ON THE OCEAN WAVE

Crews fundraising for the Matt Hampson Foundation while rowing across the Atlantic have passed the halfway mark in their challenge.

The Toughest Row started in the Canary Islands in mid-December with boat crews marking Christmas and New Year in the middle of the ocean during their 3,000-mile event.

The Foundation, which supports young people following life-changing injury in sport and has its base at the Get Busy Living Centre near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, has trustee Julian Evans in the four-man Seaslife crew and fellow long-term supporters Greg and Elliot Collins in a team appropriately named Get Busy Rowing.

“Reaching halfway is a huge milestone on the journey,” said Julian as his boat completed the first half on 3rd January.

As well as getting up close with nature, the crews have had to deal with fatigue and sleep deprivation in the three weeks since they set off. There have been mechanical issues along the way too, with Greg’s team temporarily halted by a water pump failure followed by problems with electrical storage batteries.

But they have maintained their pace as well as their spirits.

Greg published a Happy New Year video on Instagram and said: “Thank you for your continued support and messages, it means more than you know.”

The rowers expect to be at sea for around 40 days on the way to the finish line in Antigua.
