BENEFICIARIES NAMED IN TEAM FOR PARALYMPIC GOLD MEDAL DEFENCE
Beneficiaries of the Matt Hampson Foundation have been selected among the Team GB wheelchair rugby squad to defend their Paralympic Games title in Paris this summer.
Nick Cummins and Jamie Stead, both members of the historic gold medal-winning squad in Tokyo during 2021, are included again alongside Leicester Tigers Wheelchair Rugby Team colleague Gavin Walker who is named as captain. All three were awarded MBEs after the team’s win three years ago.
Their Leicester team-mate Kieran Flynn, also a Matt Hampson Foundation beneficiary after moving into para-sport following a spinal injury while playing club rugby in 2013, is selected to make his first Games appearance.
“There is a pressure to retain the Paralympic title but as a team we are very good at dealing with that,” Flynn told BBC Sport. “If we play to our abilities, we have a good chance but six or seven of the eight teams in Paris can win gold.”
Team GB: Jonathan Coggan, Ollie Mangion, Aaron Phipps, David Ross (London), Nick Cummins, Kieran Flynn, Jamie Stead, Gavin Walker (Leicester Tigers), Dan Kellett, Stuart Robinson (West Coast), Jack Smith (North East Bulls), Tyler Walker (Cheltenham Tigers).
